Fall weather is finally here! Now is a great time to start hitting the trails for some great runs!  I hope everyone is taking advantage and getting in lots of great training for all the fall races.

 

As daylight savings time approaches please remember to be safe out there. Dig into your closet and make sure you have a good reflector vest. And you’ll need a good headlamp if you want to join us on Tuesday nights; starting the 2nd week of November we will then begin our practice of running trails at night. And we will continue to have the first Tuesday of each month designated for GUTS beer & pizza night.

SAVE THE DATE:
GUTS End of Year Party

Date TBD – Weekend of December 14/15

 

We have not quite nailed down the date and time for this year’s GUTS annual member meeting and party.  It will most likely be the weekend of December 14th and 15th, You will get an Evite as soon as the date and time are finalized. This year’s party will again be at the house of the current Secretary, Kim Pike. Directions will be included in the Evite. 

 

As it is each year, the party also serves as the official yearly meeting of GUTS members. This year we will hold elections for Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary.  Sally Brooking (VP), Debbi Legg (Treasurer) and Kim Pike (Secretary) will be running for re-election. Each elected position has a 2-year term.  If you are interested in a position please email with the subject line “Nominations” to getguts@hotmail.com.

 

Finally – GUTS will be supplying the catering as well as non-alcoholic beverages.  You need only bring your favorite adult beverage, if you are so inclined. We’d love to see some of you in your street clothes (vs sweaty running gear), so please plan on attending.

M-Cubed is HERE!

 

Are you ready for the 6th annual Mystery Mountain Marathon & 12-Miler, aka MMM, aka M-Cubed? Well, we are ready for you! We hope to see everyone hitting the trails in good spirits on Sunday, October 13. As of this writing, the race is *almost* full to capacity, but if you are still interested in running and have not yet registered, try our link on active.com (via www.getguts.com), or email Kim Pike at mysterymtnmarathon@getguts.com. The coming weekend promises to be full of great trail running, spectacular views (see the photos?!), delicious food, and fun times with friends.

 

Our awesome GUTS volunteers are what make our events stand out, and we have an awesome team lined up to help you to the finish line this weekend. Please be sure to thank our volunteers! If you are coming to the race and offer to help out, we just may put you to work on the spot.

21st Annual
Atlanta FA 50K

 

Sunday, January 5, 2014
8:00 A.M.

Registration for Fat Ass will open on Ultra-signup on December 2nd at 8am EST.   To register you must be a 2014 GUTS member!!!   Registration is online ONLY (or race day if we are not full).  There is no on-line fee for the Fat Ass.  GUTS yearly membership fee is still a remarkably low price of $15 and can also be done on Ultrasignup. Your membership will be validated prior to finalization of your entry. Entrants will be posted on Ultrasignup.

 

The course is multiple loops.  All trail, with a few hills. Start/Finish will be at the Group Shelter. Plan to stay and hang out by the toasty fireplace, enjoy some warm food and great company.  So, come join the fun, astronomically low-key run!  You have nothing to lose except those holiday pounds and run more than anyone has the right to enjoy!

FatAss Crockpot Chili Contest!
Bring your best chili and vie for a special GUTS prize! Please bring the chili in a crockpot because we don't have enough burners on the stove for everyone.  GUTS will provide the bowls and utensils as well some yummy chili toppings. Each runner will be given a ballot to vote for their favorite chili and the winner will receive a special award.

 

Volunteers
We need a few dedicated volunteers to put on this event. Please send an email to fa50k@getguts.com  if you can volunteer on the day of the race. We need volunteers for check-in, aid station, timing, and course sweeps.

 

LOCATION: Sweetwater State Park in Lithia Springs

DIRECTIONS: Take I-20 west from Atlanta, exit #44 at Thornton Road, turn left and go 1/4 mile. Turn right on Blairs Bridge Road. After 2 miles, turn left on Mount Vernon Road and proceed to the park. PARKING:  You must either have a GA State Park annual pass or pay the $5 daily parking fee to park at Sweetwater State Park.

 

Please remember:  no wimps, no fees, no aid (well, maybe some, of each)  This is not a race.

Red Top Sure to be a "Super" Event

Planning is well under way for the 7th Annual Red Top Rumble 11.5M Trail Race and Kids Trail Trot! This year's event will be held on Feb 2, 2014. It happens to be Super Bowl Sunday again as well, so we see this as an exceptionally good excuse to come out and enjoy some fun trail miles then hit the afternoon Super Bowl parties. Bring the kids as well and let them enjoy a nice shorter loop through the woods during the Kids Trail Trot. Our very own GUTS Hot To Trot Race Director and Executive Chef Ryan Cobb has yet again graciously agreed to provide the post-race food. If you have been to the Rumble before you know how amazing his food is! We also have some exceptional sponsors lined up including Fleet Feet Sports that will help make this another great event.

 

Note that registration opens Nov 4 at 10 am sharp. Last year the 11.5M race (limited to 400 runners) sold out in about the amount of time it takes our speedier members to finish a 10K, so please make sure to mark your calendars. ULTRA Recipe:

Halibut with tomatoes and capers

I don't know about you but sometimes I just have a hard time figuring out how to cook my fish. Do I grill it, saute it, make a pan sauce, bake it...and which fish do I do what to?

This is a very simple fish dish that I came up with after I purchased some halibut from Costco. It's simple, tasty, and will please most everyone.

SPILL YOUR GUTS 

“Don’t let a bear do it for you…..

Q:  Dear GUTS –   Snakes scare me  - is that a major concern for trail runners?

 

A:  Depends on the trail. Some trails have more snakes than others, especially in the  warmer months. Be on the lookout when you run and jump high if needed!

 

Q: Dear GUTS – Where do all the proceeds from GUTS events go?

 

A:  First they are used to cover race expenses. Then we donate a substantial percentage from every race to the park where the race was held. A portion is used to cover GUTS club operating expenses. GUTS is a 100% volunteer organization; no volunteers or race directors receive monetary compensation.

 

Q:  Dear GUTS –   Do I really need to taper for my race? Tapers make me feel awful!


A:  To properly rest for a big race, you really should reduce mileage in the weeks prior to the race. You can add short speed sessions to keep the legs feeling loose. Massage or using a foam roller can also help keep legs from feeling heavy.

Notes from GUTS Members

 

Just started running trails four months ago and this weekend I completed my first trail half marathon! So much fun. Looking forward to more trail running and longer distances!!!

I joined GUTS in March after a break-up inspired me to get out of my comfort zone. I went from declaring that I'd never run a race longer than a half marathon again to running my first 2 ultras this month! The excitement, encouragement, and wisdom from all my new GUTS friends was just the push I needed to set and achieve new goals. Proud to say that I totally impressed myself at the Snakebite 50k and the Georgia Jewel 35 :) I've already got more ultras on my calendar!

Wanted to brag on my husband, Nick Schuster!
We both completed the Yeti Snakebite 50k, our 1st 50k! Nick finished in 7:17. He then just completed his 1st 50 mile run, the North Face Endurance this past weekend in 12:41!

I joined GUTS earlier this year in the hopes of getting out and doing more trail running and getting to meet new people. From January to March I had completed a 10K, 15K, 18K (Hog Pen) and 3 half marathons (2 Trail). I was having a great start to my running year and was about to tackle my 1st 50K when tragedy struck. On April 10th I was driving home from work and suffered a brain hemorrhage, I was admitted to the ICU at North Fulton Hospital. I had lost complete control of my right leg. This happened 3 days before my wedding and with a lot of determination I managed to walk down the isle with a cain :) (best day of my life!) I was out of running for 4 months, 1 of which was doing physical therapy to regain the control of my right leg.

 

I started back running at the start of August and signed up for the Muscle Milk Woodsy 4.5 mile trail race in Blairsville for motivation if nothing else. I got to the race with very little expectation other than finishing but much to my surprise I ended up coming in 3rd in my age group (40-49)

 

While I realize this is not the greatest feat in the history of running and probably not on par with some of the victories or runs of some other GUTS members but it was a huge victory for me and going from a hospital bed, to physical therapy, and back to running has made me a stronger person. It's going to be a long road back to build up my miles again and training has had it's moments but perhaps sharing my story will help somebody out there realize anything is possible if you put your mind to it :) Hopefully I can build up my miles in the next few months and finally join you guy's for a trail run.
