Happy Trails...

Greeting from the President

It is January and there are daffodils blooming on the trails!  Is this another crazy “winter “with rain and thunderstorms instead of snow?  At least the warm weather makes the weekly Tuesday night rain seem not so bad.  And it seems to be sprouting weekend training runs all over the place!  Check the GUTS Facebook page or the GUTS forum, for the frequent training get-togethers, easy (Jones Bridge and “the River”), medium (Kennesaw) and difficult (Coosa) trails.

The Resolution NOT to run the Resolution Run Run and the FatAss are already history for 2013, but Red Top Rumble is coming soon!  This year’s race closed in an astounding 37 minutes!  And we recently had a RTR training run with over 50 attendees. It is one popular event and we hope to see you there as a runner or volunteer. Or if you have something a little longer in mind, we have one that is as long as you can make it - Operation Endurance 24/12/6 Hour. It will take place March 30 and 31 and is held on a super fast and flat one-mile loop inside Fort Benning, with a perfect setup for camping and crewing.  Check the website for more details.

Join us for the weekly Tuesday night trail run at Kennesaw Mountain and on “first Tuesday” the run is followed by pizza & beer at the Marietta Pizza Company.

Happy Trails,
Janice Anderson

GUTS Annual Party….er Meeting?

Sunday, December 9

We had a great turnout at the annual meeting and party this year at the home of GUTS RD and Secretary, Kim Pike.  Some 80 members were in attendance.  The event was catered by Willy’s Cantina, and many fabulous desserts were brought by members.  Special thanks to GUTS member Peter Kaiser, executive chef at Twist, for donating delicious cookies from the Twist bakery.

This year’s elections were held for President and Public Relations. Janice Anderson was re-elected president, and Matt Grund was elected Public Relations.  Both ran unopposed.  Laura Pound and Aaron Dwelski were appointed as the two at-large board members.  As a reminder:  Elected board positions are held for 2 years, with elections taking place each year for the given board positions. The final two at-large positions are selected by the president on a yearly basis.  All of this is contained in the bylaws of GUTS that are available on the GUTS website.  Ask any GUTS board member if you would like more information.  If you have any suggestions or comments for any board members please email us at

With all of the events that we coordinate throughout the year, we simply could not do it without our GREAT volunteers! GUTS presented a ‘Volunteer of the Year’ award to several outstanding volunteers. All were awarded with a very cool GUTS embroidered Patagonia fleece.  Franco Conti received his award for his many hours of work for each of our races and several GUTS training events.  Lara Urtuzuastegui received her award for her behind the scenes work learning how to operate the GUTS chip timing systems and helping time some of our large races such as Red Top Rumble and Hot to Trot.

We truly appreciate the support of ALL of our GUTS volunteers and hope that we can encourage even more of you -- both "old" and new members -- to give back to the running community.  We’re always looking for volunteers for upcoming events; it is a terrific way to meet other GUTS members and see races from a whole new perspective!

Join GUTS for an outstanding chance to rack up some miles! Once again we are hosting a 24 hour (individual and relay), 12 hour and 6 hour event at Fort Benning, Georgia. The course is a one mile flat dirt loop around Stewart Field, and we anticipate seeing many great performances again this year.

Get Ready for the Southeast's BEST Trail Marathon!

The 6th annual GUTS Fall favorite, Mystery Mountain Marathon & 12-Miler, is set for Sunday, October 13, 2013. Make plans now to spend a beautiful Fall weekend at Fort Mountain State Park.

MMM's marathon is legendary as the toughest trail marathon in the Southeast. If a full marathon is not in the cards, we also have a challenging 12-mile race. Both races are almost exclusively on trails, and feature stunning scenery. But the best reason to come to MMM has always been and remains the fun-filled family atmosphere before, during and after the race itself. Come celebrate the season with trail running friends old and new.

Registration for MMM opens early this year, on February 4th! Check out the (soon-to-be-updated) website for details, and stay tuned for information about training runs and our annual camping/running weekend in August!

See you in October!

GUTS Members Break Records at Across the Years

The New Year was a good start for Georgia and GUTS. Eight Georgia runners, Joe Fejes, Vikena Yutz, Willy Syndram, Phil and Rhonda Sustar, Josh and Leigh Saint, and Ed Compton participated in the 72-hour race at Across The Years (ATY) in Phoenix, AZ. It was a phenomenal event with each of these runners creating amazing tales of pain, frustration, determination, and then, personal (and world-class) success. The two most remarkable stories are those of Joe Fejes and Kena Yutz who both broke the ATY course records in their respective categories. Although the 72-hr event is not yet an official ultra-racing category, both Joe and Kena now appear to hold the longest certified distance for US runners in the 72-hr event.

Red Top Rumble Training Run

With the 6th Annual Red Top Rumble right around the corner (in addition to being some really awesome trails!), we figured it would be a good opportunity to do a training run on the course. The warmer temps brought a big crowd to the park on Sunday Jan 13. We tried to count, but this is a speedy group and best guess is we had 60 people come enjoy time on the trails.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the 11.5 mile loop, some so much so that they ended up getting in a few “bonus” miles.

We also welcomed a group from Fleet Feet. They are sponsoring the Rumble and signed up some people interested in running more trails and targeting Red Top as their “A” race. They have been a great sponsor for Red Top Rumble and we appreciate them coming out to the training run!

As always, there was a well-stocked selection of post-run food. The PB&J sandwiches seemed to go over well and we had to frisk down a few people to ensure the brownies didn’t run off.

Red Top Rumble

Speaking of the Red Top Rumble; It’s right around the corner on Feb 3. I know many of the quicker GUTS members signed up as the race sold out online in a record 37 minutes this year. We are looking forward to hosting another great event this year. We’ve got some incredible sponsors and a great group of dedicated volunteers that will make it a great day for 400+ adult athletes and 30-40 kids.

Thank you to all our great sponsors.

Upcoming GUTS Training Runs

Join us for "Another tasting of the Cohutta."

More details will be sent out by email but mark your calendar for Sunday, March 3. The run will be led by Richard Schick and will be between 15-20 miles.

Who is it?

Each quarter, we'll see just how well you know your fellow GUTS runners. So, were you able to guess last month's mystery GUTS member?

It's GUTS' favorite sandbagger, John "Sandy" Mollenhour, showing off the beautiful mine ruins of Leadville, Colorado last summer.

Can you guess who this quarter's GUTS member is? Check your guess in next quarter's newsletter!

“Don’t let a bear do it for you…..

Q: Will I get sick or poisoned using bleach to treat my water on long runs?

A:  I hope you have not been using so much bleach that you got sick! Add 1/4 teaspoon (or 4 drops) of regular, unscented, liquid household bleach for each liter of water. Double the amount of chlorine for murky water, cloudy water, or extremely cold water. Optionally use drink mix to mask the taste of the bleach.
